About Orestiada

Orestiada is located in the northeastern part of the Evros region, 907 kilometers from Athens and 406 kilometers from Thessaloniki. With a population of 23,000 residents, it is the second-largest city in the area after Alexandroupoli.

According to myth, Orestes, seeking refuge from the Erinyes and following the advice of the Delphic Oracle, arrived at the confluence of the three rivers in the region. There, he cleansed himself of his sins and found healing. Orestes founded a city in this place, giving it the name “Orestiada.” Over the centuries, Orestiada grew to become the heart of Thrace, serving as the capital of significant Thracian kings.

The square is adorned with the monument of Georgios Stathatos, a resistance fighter, and the imposing marble statue of Ecumenical Patriarch Cyril V, who was hanged in 1821 in Adrianople.
