The 9th Kavousi Mountain Races will take place on October 22nd in Kavousi, Ierapetra, Crete! Mark the date because this running event should definitely not be missing from your calendar!
In the early hours of the first Sunday in October, the Kavousi Mountain Half Marathon kicks off at 9:30 in one of the oldest villages in Eastern Crete, the village of Kavousi in Ierapetra. This race presents a real challenge, with a 1450-meter elevation gain. Athletes will traverse trails and dirt roads, with 85% of the route being trails and 15% dirt roads. Along the course, participants will have the opportunity to explore a world of unique natural beauty, featuring canyons and charming settlements.
For those with less experience or seeking a more accessible race, the Avgos Trail is an excellent choice. It starts at 10:00 and includes a 510-meter elevation gain, consisting of 85% trails and 15% dirt roads. Along this route, athletes can enjoy the enchanting local culture and the beautiful nature that surrounds it.
For the younger runners, there are also a 1000 m as well as a 500-meter race designed for middle school children, offering a beautiful route that crosses one of the region’s oldest villages.
During your visit to Kavousi, be sure not to miss exploring the village’s cultural landmarks. The square with its cafes in the center of the village is a focal point, and around it, you’ll find the churches of Saint George and the Twelve Apostles, which are worth visiting.
